Winter Decorating Tips for Containers

If you have been into Cobblestone Gardens & Market lately, you probably can smell the season in the air.  Balsam fir, incense cedar, and juniper scents have filled the building.  Decorating for the season is fun, easy and really gets me into the holiday spirit.  Let’s talk inside, outside, boughs, and more!  Today we will focus on containers.

Witner Pots at a Commercial PropertySpruce Tips.  Containers on your doorstep, window boxes on the front of your house or even annual beds in your landscape are great places to showcase spruce tips.  Spruce tips come in three sizes, small (1′ tall) - great for window boxes, medium (2′-3′ tall) – perfect for most containers and large (4′-5′ tall) - best used as trees in your landscape or as the center in large containers.  In order for spruce tips to stay green it is best to trim their ends and add water to the soil, this way they can take up some moisture and eventually freeze into place (this will happen as soon as the weather turns cold).

Evergreen Boughs.  Boughs are probably the most versatile decorating option for the holiday season.  You can use a little or a lot and they go a long way.  They come in long needles, like Norway or White pine.  They are available in short needle like shore pine, or feathery cedar in Port Orford, coned or incense.  Don’t forget a touch of salal, oregonia or huck.  These leafy options give your decor a different texture.

Curly Willow BranchesBranches.  Branches come in different heights, diameters, and colors.  Birch branches are generally brown and look as though they were plucked from nature (mostly because they were), they give a natural look.  Dogwood is mostly found in reds and yellows, both natural but giving your arrangement a pop of color and height.  Curly willow is usually green or orange and just like it’s name says, it gives a curly texture.  Birch poles are usually large branches with their birch paper making a bold white statement in your decor.  Use any of these to add height to your container or centerpiece.

Pine Cones.  These too come in many sizes.  Sugar cones are the largest, followed by Jeffrey cones, which are about the size of a man’s fist and then there are the ponderosa cones, which are pretty average in size.  Pine Cones add another element of design with color and texture.  Paint them gold or white for even more options.

Embellishments.  Where do I start?  There are so many great things you can add to your designs to make them stand-out and to give them personality.  Seed pots, hydrangea blooms, balls (used for decorating your Christmas tree), ornaments, berry picks, ribbon, bows and so much more.  Use your creativity and add a personal touch.

Tips.  It is great to get your containers planted before the soil freezes!  Remember if you have glazed pots it is best to put them away during the winter, otherwise the freezing and thawing can crack them.  If you soil appears to be frozen solid I would add some HOT water to it and that helps loosen it up.  I use a product called Wilt Stop by Bonide to spritz all of my evergreen boughs, spruce tips and other greenery.  This keeps them looking fresh all season long.

Water, Water, Water

Fall is a great time to plant but there are things to consider when planting during this season.  I am sure you have heard that September was the driest on record and it appears that October might be the same.

It is important to water in the Fall. Plants need water, whether is is 90 degrees out or 50 degrees out, it is essential for them to take root, grow and survive.  A lot of people have had their sprinkler systems blown out for the fall (you never know when we will get a few inches of snow or the temperatures will dip below the 30′s) but that doesn’t mean you should stop watering.  Even shrubs, perennials, trees and evergreens you planted earlier in the year, need water.  It is good to continue to water your plants until we have a few hard freezes.  One inch per week on a slow drip is a good rule of thumb.  Keep in mind if you have just planted a shrub or perennial, you may want to water a few times a week since most of the soil is bone dry.

Bulbs.  Bulbs can be planted even through a freeze or two.  Soil temperature doesn’t get as cold as the air temperature so you have plenty of time to get spring flowering bulbs in the ground now to enjoy next spring.  Make sure to water the bulbs when you plant and if you add fertilizer, I like to put the fertilizer in the bottom of the hole scatter some soil on top of the fertilizer and then plant the bulbs.  If you have pesky squirrels digging up your tulip bulbs plant a few daffodils with them and they should leave your bulbs alone.  They don’t like the taste of daffodils.

Fall Mums and PumpkinsMums.  Most mums sold at your local garden center are just seasonal.  They are sold to give you a burst of fall color not as perennials.  Perennial mums are usually sold all season at your garden center, however most of us don’t really think about mums until fall.  Perennial mums can be planted in the fall but they are putting a lot of energy into flower production so it can be stressful on them.  It is a good idea to plan ahead and buy your perennial mums earlier in the season, so they can give you a show in the fall.

Decorating Contest.  Check out the Bloomington Crow’s Halloween Decorating Contest.  You could win a $50 gift card to Cobblestone Gardens & Market.

Bringing Fall Color into Your Landscape

Cobblestone LandscapingThis time of year we get many compliments on the landscape that lines our iron fence at Cobblestone Gardens and Market.  There was a lot of thought that went into designing the landscape, including bloom cycles, texture, flower color, our wants and the designer’s knowledge.  This are all things to consider when you are choosing to improve your landscape.  I thought I would share some plants that are absolutely striking this time of year.

Tiger Eyes Sumac.  This isn’t your grandmother’s sumac.  It suckers a lot less than standard sumac and the foliage is almost fern-like.  Its feathery leaves go from a charteruse green, to softer lemons, with red interspersed.  It gets to be a height of over 6′ with a width of the same.  This plant will stand out in any landscape and put on a great fall show.

Star Showers Virginia Creeper, Boston Ivy, Engleman Ivy.  I drive down 35E in St. Paul two times a day, on my commute to and from work.  Ivy lines the median and the fences and landscape along the freeway.  It isn’t always spectacular but right now it is it is stunning!  Deep reds radiate from the otherwise nondescript landscape.  The Star Showers Virginia Creeper is showy year round  due to its variegated foilage in the spring and summer months and now with it’s brillantly colored red leaves.

Burning Bush Fall Color

Burning Bush.  The burning bush really only puts on it’s show in the fall but, oh what a show it is!  This plant has a robust red that lasts throughout the fall and will make you remember just what you love about fall, which is, the colors, crisp cool weather and starry nights.   Burning bushes can be dwarf in size, or large and even come grafted into a tree form.  There is a burning bush that would be perfect for your yard.

Red Silver Japanese Silver Grass

Ornamental Grasses.  I don’t even know where to begin.  There are soooooo many to choose from.  The most popular amongst landscapers is the Karl Forester Feather Reed Grass, or one of it’s cousins, such as Overdam, or Avalanche.  My personal favorite is Shenandoah Switch Grass, it has a wispy feel to it with airy brown panicles in the fall, that comes from its deep burgundy wine fall foliage.  Grasses are desired for their showy plumes in the fall, and the Red Silver and Silver Feather grasses are perfect this time of year.

It’s clean up time!

Fall started last week and this week brings us into October, which means it is time to clean up our yards and gardens before the snow flies.  I know, I know, how dare I say the “S” word.  In Minnesota the snow can sneak up on us, so it is best to take care of your yard maintenance early.

Keeping an eye on things to do for fallLawns.  Cooler air temperatures and warm soil temperatures make it a good time to over-seed your lawn.  The existing lawn will protect the seed during the germination process.  Once it gets closer to the end of October applying a fertilizer to your lawn will encourage new root growth and thicken your lawn for the next year.

Dividing Perennials Like HostaPerennials.  There are several good reasons to divide your perennials.  Flower buds can get smaller over time, if you plants get overgrown.  The quantity of flower buds your plant produces can also decrease over time, if your plants need dividing.  Common perennials that like to be divided in the fall include, bee balm, daylilies, hosta, geranium, garden phlox, yarrow, and coneflowers.  It is best to wait at least three years after planting a typical perennial before you divide it.  Dig up the plant and with a shovel or sharp tool thin out the plant into smalled clumps.  Before you move the plant to a new home, cut back the foliage by half and then replant.  If it is a new flower bed, be sure to amend the soil with peat, hummus or manure.  This will give your plants nutrients.  Watering is important when you transplant or divide perennials.  Just because the temperature is cooler doesn’t mean your plants don’t need water.  Keep a regular water scheduling even if we get a frost, the soil temperature is still warm.

Seed Collecting.  Many gardeners take time in the fall to round up the seeds of plants they want to savor next year.  Seed collecting is pretty easy but it can be tedious.  It is best to collect once the seed head/pods are dry.  Cut off the desired amount and then let the seed head/pod dry in a cool sunny space for a week or two, store in a paper bag.  Once the seed pods have been dried it is time to sift through what you have and actually pull out the seed – this varies per plant.  Cut open seed pods and remove the seeds, or pull apart the flower bud to shake loose any seeds.  Shaking the material through a sieve separates the junk from the seeds.  You can do this with annual seeds, coneflowers, grasses, sunflowers and much more.

Shrubs.  Generally speaking I don’t do much with my shrubs this time of year.  I have a few roses that bolted this summer during the heat, so I will cut off the canes down to match the rest of the shrub.  I do most of my shrub trimming in the spring or after the shrub has flowered.  It is not a good idea to trim your lilacs or magnolias right now, they have already set their buds for next year.  It is alright to trim shrubs if they are lanking or sporadic but you can also do it in the spring to assess any winter damage or die-back.
